On Thursday 25^th May I went and saw The Addams Family at the Marlowe Theatre. Though it has been professionally performed on Broadway, The Addams Family has never been showcased in the UK; until now of course. I believe that there is a reason why. I found that the musical didn’t quite live up to its expectations. Even before I saw it I was skipping multiple songs in the soundtrack. The Addams Family misses that pizazz that I look for when I go to see a show. There’s some creepiness, but not quite enough to get you hooked. Some comedic lines did not land, and I didn’t laugh as much as I expected I would.

I don’t think that this is due to direction or the performers. The performers did the best that they could do with the material. Carrie Hope Fletcher stood out among the rest, with her extremely powerful voice and bold facial expressions. The main character, Gomez, played by Cameron Blakely also stole the show. He had finesse and poise, plus his Spanish accent was spot on; from what I can tell anyway! He was very lively and charismatic, creating moments to laugh at. As for Morticia Addams, I didn’t quite find her creepy enough. I’ve never seen The Addams Family, but I’d expect when talking about enjoying death and all things ghoulish that the mother would be a little more sinister with an added sprinkle of sultry. The Samantha Womack played the character as mature, comedic and slightly sultry, but there could’ve been more seduction and oomph.

I found myself turning off a few times during some long scenes or songs. A lot of the songs were too repetitive, most sounded the same, and the ones that didn’t often didn’t quite fit. The first Act felt like a blur to me and it was hard to pay proper attention. I missed a lot of lines and jokes as the melody often sounded monotone. There were times as well when there was too much happening on stage, taking away from the matter of the song itself. To add to that, a lot of scenes either didn’t flow into each other, or didn’t make sense at all.

All criticisms aside, there were scenes that hooked me in, that I wish I could see more. It’s no wonder that Pulled is such a popular song as it is to die for! It doesn’t quite fit with some of the other songs, but it really is a hit. Not to mention that Fletcher does an outstanding job in performing the song. Another favourite in Act 1 is Full Disclosure. A longer scene that is really fun to watch! The Game, a group activity where you drink from a chalice and tell a secret, is something completely relatable. Everyone bounced off of each other in this scene. What was going to happen next? Whose secret is going to come out next? There was a little bit of suspense with that sprinkle of comedy and drama. It is at this point in The Addams Family, that we see Charlotte Page's immense talent. The moment when Alice Beineke drinks from the chalice is one of the best parts of the show. Her operatic voice bursts out and we see her ability to play the dark as well as the light.

I enjoyed Act 2 a lot more but like in Act 1, a lot of the act 2 songs sounded like filler, and again, I really enjoyed Fletcher’s performance in her duet with Lucas, Crazier Than You. Another catchy song that speaks of passion and taking chances; one of my favourites in fact, I'm sure the romance helps with that. It's something incredibly relatable and fun! However, like Pulled it didn’t fit in with the rest of the music.

I have no idea why Les Dennis’ character, Uncle Fester, was in love with the moon, and whether he actually did meet the spirit of the moon in his song. It wasn’t quite clear. That part was strange, very very strange. I like quirky storylines, in fact I love them, but this musical didn’t seem to know whether it was surreal or normal. One song would be comedic like The Producers, and then suddenly we’d have an emotional number that doesn’t fit in with the dissonance of other songs. I would’ve loved to have heard more songs like the When You're An Addams, a bit more upbeat with some sass. Unfortunately, we had slow numbers such as Just Around the Corner, and long-winded exposition numbers like, Gomez' solo, Trapped. The Addams Family was confused with what theme it was going for. In one scene its stagey comedy like The Producers, then it’s emotional rock like Next to Normal or Rock of Ages, and suddenly at the end I feel like I’m watching the end of Cats. Are we going for classic music, rock or 80’s? I’m confused, mixtures of styles are common in musicals but these songs don’t fit together at all.

Although I didn’t find the musical particularly captivating, the costumes were wonderful. I loved the idea of all the ancestors, and their different weathered outfits. I would’ve loved them to have more involvement in the show, perhaps within the storyline. My favourite of them were the ringleader and the geisha.

It’s a pity that I wasn’t impressed like I wanted to be. I would’ve liked the storyline to be more complex, and at times, truer to how certain characters are. But perhaps The Addams Family is a style of musical that just isn’t for me. Despite the show lacking consistency, I’m glad that I went to see it, there were moments that I loved, and I got to see some incredible actors. I’ll be singing the opening song and clicking for days.

The Addams Family has taken social media by storm, with lots of people giving it five star reviews, so I’m sure lots of people disagree with my 3 star rating. In England, the cold weather is finally fading after sticking around for a long time! A looooong long time! The jackets are off, and the sun is out. I’ve been planning to share my love of spring and summer for a while now, and the transition between the two seasons is the perfect time to let you guys know why I love this time of year. So here’s a few of my summer faves!

Flowers – As you can see from my main picture for this blogpost, the flowers that pop up during Spring are beautiful! Suddenly everything smells amazing, and here in the woods you get bluebells everywhere. They’re such a beautiful sight to see, I feel calm just looking at them. We are well on the way to summer now so unfortunately these flowers are ending their life for this year, but it means that I have next year’s bluebells to look forward to! Plus, the leaves are all on the trees now. Nature is at its finest.

Warm Weather – No longer is there the need to wrap up in a coat every time you step out the house. As much as I love wearing scarves and jackets, there’s something freeing about being able to walk around wearing a cute dress or floaty top and no coat in sight! Plus, all this humidity means cold showers and ice creams. Yay!

Thunderstorms – Perhaps this is a strange thing to be on my list but I just love thunderstorms! That’s when I’m inside during one of course. Being able to sit at the window with a good book, watching lightning strike in the sky, counting between the flash and the bang to tell how far away it is. It brings back memories of when I used to do that during power-cuts as a child. Nature can be terrifying and mesmerising all at the same time. Not to mention that the smell of trees and grass after a rainstorm is divine!

Smells – I’ve already mentioned a few smells already in this post. Flowers and leaves on trees, rain, but there’s many more! Sun cream effectively becomes a perfume, not the best part of summer but still an essential. But some other smells make up for that. Who doesn’t love walking past a barbecue or someone mowing their lawn? Mmm the smell of cut grass!

Late Nights – It’s funny how time suddenly creeps up on you. One minute you’re closing the curtains at 4pm because it’s already dark, and the next you’re sitting out in the garden with friends at 10pm because it’s still bright outside. Some of my best memories are with late nights with friends, sitting on the patio with some nibbles and music playing in the background. Let’s put a few fairy lights in that image too, it really is picturesque isn’t it?

Romance – I am a sucker for romance and I really feel that love is in the air at this time. In summer you can just feel the amount of opportunities, the needs to go out and meet new people. The possibilities are endless! With beaches, barbecues, and late nights there’s so many places you could meet someone. Even if you’re not interested in romance at the moment, it’s the perfect atmosphere to treat yourself. Sit in the garden, or on the beach with a good book!

Outdoors – Everyone takes the opportunity to get out during this time of year. When it’s not raining there’s so much to do! You can challenge yourself and do something new. Go on holiday somewhere, or stroll along a beach somewhere. Do a sporting activity or go strawberry picking. The world is your oyster.

Fashion – Summer is my favourite time of year for fashion. All clothes are light coloured, people wear sunglasses and cute hats! You can tie your hair back in a cute braid, and wear a floaty dress with sandals that compliment it. So many flowery patterns are out at this time too! I have a kimono cardigan with flowers on that I’ve been dying to wear, now is the perfect time. Might I add that, personally, flower crowns will never go out of style? I will be wearing them all summer long.

Music – Is it just me or d some of the best songs come out during this time of year? All the music is so upbeat and bubbly, more people release country, and we get those slow, romantic songs; the ones that make you feel really nostalgic. Two nights ago I discovered Miley Cyrus' new song, Malibu, and it is the perfect tune for this summer. I'm going to have to crack out a summer playlist after listening to Malibu on repeat! 

Films – Earlier I mentioned romance, and summer is definitely the best time for that, not just because of opportunities but because everyone wants to release a romantic comedy at this time. I live for romantic comedies! They are the apple of my eye. My light at the end of the tunnel! Some of the best films get released during the summer holidays and this year is no exception. We’ve got Wonder Woman and Pirates of the Caribbean coming out. Plus, a new Zac Efron film called Baywatch! Are you guys excited? Cause I definitely am!

Over here in England, things have started heating up. Suddenly it’s too hot to wear a jacket, and the sun’s still shining after 8pm. Ironically, The Broke and Bookish decided to set this week’s topic as a Summer Freebie. It’s like they know!! So I decided to do my top ten summer reads. Some of books in this list I read in summer, others I’d like to and a few just gave me the summer tingles when I read them!

To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before by Jenny Han – I bet most people are listing Jenny Han’s other novel, The Summer I Turned Pretty this week, but it’s her other series that speaks to me the most. I read To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before two summers ago, when I was just entering the world of YA. I can never let go of the nostalgia and love I felt while reading this book, and every summer I look for a book that will make me feel the same way.

Just One Day by Gayle Forman – This is the first of two travelling books on my list. Summer is the time of year where people go on holiday, so of course I’d pick a book where the main character goes abroad! Allyson goes for a spontaneous trip to Paris with a cute boy, reading about all the different sights in the book made me really want to go there this summer!

Since You’ve Been Gone by Morgan Matson – Another book two summers ago. Actually, I read it all in one hot night! Since You’ve Been Gone is the perfect summer read! It’s set during summer when the main character’s friends goes missing and leaves her a bucket list to achieve during her summer holiday. One of my favourite things about this book is that it had a playlist! And some of the songs were country. Romance, summer and country music?? Win win!

The Mediator By Meg Cabot – We’re taking it back a bit now to an older book. The Mediator was one of my favourite series when I was younger. The main character is so sassy, it’s fantastic! Why is this on the list? It’s set in California where it’s always warm! Savannah fights ghosts and shares a room with a hot one at that. A tantalising romance series for the summer.

Safe Haven by Nicholas Sparks – Two summers ago really was a good time for reading because this is yet another amazing book that I read then. I could’ve put any Nicholas Sparks book on this list, hell, I could’ve made the whole list out of Nicholas Sparks books! The majority of his books are usually set in summer or on the beach. Perhaps that’s the most romantic setting! But out of all of them Safe Haven really stands out to me because there’s more than just romance in it. You get more than one perspective, and there’s a bit of mystery to it too! Plus, a seaside town, what could go wrong there?

When Dimple Met Rishi by Sandhya Menon– It’s probably quite clear from this list and previous top ten Tuesdays that I am a massive fan of romances! They make me weak at the knees. So it’s no surprise that I’d want a new one! When Dimple Met Rishi is set in alternating perspectives and tells the story of Dimple and Rishi, didn’t see that one coming did you, who are arranged to be married. Their parents set their first meeting at a summer program. I’ve seen so many people reviewing When Dimple Met Rishi, and it’s great to read about characters who have a different culture to mine. As soon as it comes out in the UK I am buying it and reading it!

The Light Between Oceans by M. L. Stedman – A more sombre pick, The Light Between Oceans would be very fitting as a summer read as it’s set on an island. There’s even a lighthouse on the cover! That would mean lots of beach scenes I’m sure. This one is meant to be a tear-jerker but would definitely be a cool down from all those steamy romances.

Eat Pray Love by Elizabeth Gilbert – I’m sure lots of people are planning a few holidays around this time of year, so it’s a great idea to turn to books for some travel inspiration. Eat Pray Love is just that! There are three destinations in one, plus a nice bit of romance at the end. In Elizabeth Gilbert’s memoir, she tracks her ventures to Italy, India and Indonesia. I remember reading this at the beginning of the summer last year and I found myself starving when it got to Gilbert talking about ice cream and pizza! It’s definitely a great book to get you out exploring this summer.

A Game of Thrones by George R. R. Martin – I feel like it’s not summer without reading a massive book. It’s the perfect time for it! The Song of Ice and Fire series is a great option to go for as you get the best of both worlds! In Daenerys’ Targaryen chapters you get the stifling heat of Essos. Meanwhile, in the north of Westeros, you get to prepare yourself for winter with Jon Snow.

Girl Online by Zoe Sugg – Last but not least on my list, a refreshing short read by Youtube’s Zoe Sugg. Experience being whisked away to New York, getting in a few nooks and crannies with a hunky popstar named Noah, and also get the local feel of Brighton’s beaches. Like Just One Day, Sugg refers to lots of different landmarks in the book, so you really feel like you’re there. I’ve still got the last book in this series to read, so perhaps I’ll take a trip to Brighton and read it on the train!

A few weeks ago on Show Sunday I wrote a post about the shows I’m looking forward to seeing this summer. I thought it would be only fitting if I told you guys about some of the best musicals I’ve seen in the past. This is in no particular order. I can wittle it down to five, but order them?! I’m too indecisive for that!

Miss Saigon – In 2015 I saw the revival of Miss Saigon at the Prince Edward Theatre. Based on the opera, Madama Butterfly, the story is heart-wrenching and tragic. Miss Saigon is a mega-musical about Kim, an orphaned Vietnamese girl trapped in the midst of the Vietnam War, and Chris, an American soldier. Kim is lead to a strip bar where she and Chris meet and fall in love. The star-crossed lovers only spend a short time together before they are torn apart by the unfortunate circumstances around them. What happens next is moving in many ways.

I’ve seen some mega-musicals that haven’t impressed me too much, the tourist vibe was either too strong or the performers didn’t quite hit the mark for whatever reason. However, Miss Saigon did not fall into that category. I was blown away, in fact I pretty much cried the whole way through. All of the performers were incredibly talented, it amazed me how they could reach such emotional depth eight times a week.  Eva Noblezada and Chris Peluso had phenomenal stage chemistry. My favourite performance would have to be from Jon Jon Briones though. He captured the audience as the Engineer, creating comedy in the perfect moments. After I left I found myself listening to the soundtrack for months. I still get goose bumps when I hear the notes soar two years on. Mark my words; I will see it again someday.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers – A more traditional revival, Seven Brides for Seven Brothers toured in 2013 and I was lucky enough to see it. I hadn’t seen MGM’s movie so this was a completely new experience. I was enthralled by it! If you haven’t heard of the musical before, here’s a quick plot summary! Milly, played by Helena Blackman, meets backwoodsman Adam Pontipee, played by Sam Attwater, at the local tavern. They subsequently get married, and Milly goes to live with her new husband, only to find that he has six other brothers to look after. To solve the situation she decides to marry them off, and turns an unfortunate situation into a merry one.

Seven Brides for Seven Brothers was one of my first traditional musicals to watch and it is still one of my favourites now. The production was filled with lively and flawless choreography, with performers leaping over each other, lifting each other up and doing lots of quick turns. To add to this the vocals were flawless, and the costumes were to die for! Petticoats were twirling everywhere. All the men and women wore different bright colours, lightening up the stage. Just talking about it now is making me wish I could see it again! I’ll just have to watch the film instead.

Gypsy – I was lucky enough to see Imelda Staunton star in Sondheim’s biographical musical at Chichester Festival Theatre before it moved to the West End. A lot of popular West End shows were originally produced in Chichester; I guess I chose the right university to go to! Gypsy is based on the burlesque entertainer, Gypsy Rose Lee’s memoir, which tells the story of her childhood, relationship with her mother and rise to fame. Its musical counterpart focuses on Rose Hovick’s need to live through her two daughters to experience the dreams she could never achieve herself.

Staunton’s performance left me speechless. Each line was delivered with expertise, she was a true gem! Her performance of the finale, Rose’s Turn was definitely a favourite of mine, the anger and passion in her voice and acting was immense. As well as Rose’s Turn there is another favourite part of this musical. During Let Me Entertain You (Reprise) in Act 2, Louise transitions into Gypsy Rose Lee, shown through a sultry yet sophisticated burlesque act. I wish I could be as classy and sexy as Lara Pulver who plays her.

Avenue Q – I have been waiting and waiting for Sell a Door to do another tour of Avenue Q. This musical is a lot more quirky and controversial than the last three shows on my list. Plus, it is funny as heck! Avenue Q is a parody of children’s puppet shows such as Sesame Street, addressing important topics through obscene jokes; topics ranging from the troubles of life and racism to sex and love. This show proves that you really don’t need a huge set to entertain an audience. A few puppets, a backdrop and some brilliant actors will do splendidly!

The story starts when Princeton goes in search of his purpose after getting a BA in English. The only affordable place he can find to live is Avenue Q, where he meets lots of hilariously unique characters such as Kate Monster and Gary Coleman. You get the opportunity to laugh through their strange conversations as you watch their relationships develop. I saw this performance so long ago now that I can’t remember who played who, but I do remember their voice acting being quite impressive, especially the woman who played cute Kate Monster as well as Lucy the Slut. It’s not surprising to me that people who aren’t musical theatre regulars also adore this musical. Now can they tour again please?!

Matilda – Matilda is one of those shows that you’ll leave and think, why can’t I have that much talent? Because believe me, the children in that show are stars. Right from the beginning they perform with a mass load of energy. I found myself grinning from ear to ear. Since I saw it for my birthday (thank you Fern) I have been dying to go see it again. Every aspect of this musical is incredible. The lyrics, the melodies, the set, the costumes, the performers, everything! Although it’s aimed at children everyone can love it. The show does feel a little bit like a pantomime, especially in the television song, but that’s what makes it so loveable!

Matilda, written by Roald Dahl, is an inspiring story about a little genius who develops a parental bond with her teacher and sets out to save Miss Honey and her fellow school friends from the awful headteacher, Mrs Trunchball. Mrs Trunchball’s costume was goofily terrifying might I add! One parent had to take their child out because she started crying upon seeing her. It reminded me when I was a child and hid under my seat when the wicked witch came on stage. 

The child and adult performers really work together to make this show delightful. It is warm, clever and full of hope and joy. Just like a chocolate cake! (Small Bruce reference there) Tim Minchin does an amazing job at creating witty, intricate lyrics that matches with an equally intricate set and choreography! Like all the other shows mentioned, just thinking about it is making me want to see it again. I won’t give too much away as you really should see it yourself. I really hope that this musical stays in the west end for a good length of time. That way I can see it again!

So that’s my top 5 musicals that I’ve seen so far! I may have waffled on a bit, there’s so much more I could’ve mentioned. I hope you’ve enjoyed it, and stay tuned for next Sunday when I’ll be reviewing The Addams Family. I can’t wait!

Like The Fault in Our Stars and many other books similar to this, Me Before You left me speechless. I still feel tongue-tied now, not really knowing what to say. I read Jojo Moye’s book in a couple of days, whizzing through the last 150 pages in one night, although fairly groggily considering the tragic turn it takes. When I read the last page, closed the book and breathed I realised that I had no idea what to think. All I knew was that I felt sad.

If you haven’t read the book or seen the film, I will warn you that there are a few spoilers in this review. It may be a good idea to go grab the book from your local library, or rent it out before reading the rest of my review. However, if you already know what happens then read on!

Me Before You is a fairly quick read with a powerful argument. It blurs the lines between what is right and wrong. Do we have a choice to take our own lives? If we have less control over our own body, should other people decide everything for us? These questions are very controversial and upon reading reviews after, it is evident that many people found the ending appalling, finding that it gives the wrong message. I however, feel stuck in the middle, not really knowing what to think.

So what is the book about? It all starts off when Louisa, a 26 year old woman who has never left her parents’ house, finds herself in need of a new job. She is hired to be a carer for Will, a 35 year-old quadriplegic, who we find out later on in the book is seriously considering going through with an assisted suicide. It’s pretty clear just from the synopsis alone that Jojo Moyes is intending to pull at your heartstrings and open a discussion that could get very heated.

The writing flowed quite nicely, and I loved the little features in Lou and Will’s personality. Lou’s love of wacky fashion, yellow and black tights, and Will’s sarcastic humour, teasing with the undertone of affection. Most of the book is set in Lou’s point of view, chapters dotted here or there contain a few other character’s thoughts. I really would’ve liked to have seen this technique more, it would’ve been really interesting to see this story from Will’s perspective.

Of course, like any chick-lit, it’s no surprise that we are introduced to the wonders of relationships as Lou and Will gradually fall in love. All the while reality slowly leaks in until it suddenly hits you like a tonne of bricks. In this I am of course referring to Will’s final choice, that despite the happiness he has experienced and new improvements on his life, for him it is still not enough, and leaving his life behind is his answer.

Some say that Will’s choice is unnecessary, that Jojo Moyes shouldn’t have chose that, as it gives out the message that a disabled life isn’t worth living. However, a lot of people fail to notice that other options are shown. Lou converses with friends online who are in similar situations to Will, who have found positivity and a way of living happily. Does this make the decision to make Will’s final choice to be the negative justifiable? To be honest, I don’t know. After reading many other people’s views when I myself enjoyed the book, I now second guess myself. Me Before You causes people to ask the difficult questions however, and that holds its own significance. Perhaps the message isn’t that disabled lives aren’t worthwhile, or to help others find happiness. Maybe its that we all should have the right to decide for ourselves, but we should always strive to improve ourselves, question our own views and ways of living and move forward.

Overall I’ve given this book 4.5 stars. I thoroughly enjoyed it at the time that I read it, despite the contrast to Geekerella which I had read previously. Unfortunately, I didn’t cry like many other people say they did, I never seem to cry at books anymore anyway. This book has had a lot of people thinking. I wouldn’t say it’s inspiring, but it’s definitely thought-provoking. Next thing to do is watch the film! Have you read this book or seen the film? What were your thoughts on it? Although Mother’s Day has already passed in the UK, over in America it is Mother’s Day this weekend, so that is the theme for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday. Like a fortnight ago, The Broke and Bookish has given everyone free reign to choose what they like under that topic. And I’ve chosen characters who would be good mums! Sometimes an epilogue shows a main character looking after their children when it really doesn’t fit with the character. At other times, it really really does! Don’t you just wonder sometimes what they’d be like when they grew up?

Top Ten Tuesday is back with another topic. And this week The Broke and the Bookish are asking us all: What would we have on our reading wishlist? Following a good long think, this is what I managed to come up with.

Travellers – As soon as I know that a book is about a circus or a group of people who travel, I instantly want to read it. It’s a lifestyle that is so different from my own, so I somehow find it magical.

90's Setting – After reading Attachments by Rainbow Rowell I am craving to read another book set in the 90's. I grew up watching rom-coms where the characters emailed each other instead of texting or met up in person. Reading a book like that brings back so many memories!

Obscure Retellings – I love retellings, but everyone always seems to pick the same fairytales. Cinderella, Snow White, Little Red Riding Hood. I’d love to read a modernised version of Bluebeard, or The Tinderbox. I saw a modernised play of The Little Mermaid by Shared Experience where our society causes her to fall into depression, and eventually she goes back to the sea. It was so interesting! Also, if someone writes a retelling of Jane Eyre then I am reading it as soon as I can.

Struggling Romance Stories with a Happy Ending – For some reason there is this ongoing trend with romance, whether it be films or books, to show a relationship working, failing and then ending. I don’t know whether these writers are trying to be realistic, but after reading numerous stories like it I’m bored of it. I’d love to read a book that is realistic, the couple have issues, but they constantly work on them and in the end it shows an indefinite future where all the hard work pays off.

Fated Romance – On a slightly more unrealistic note, books containing fate are wonderful to me. Especially stories where two people meet at the beginning, and then don’t meet again until the end. It explores the magic of coincidence, what ifs and beginnings.

Goofy Characters – You know when a character does something so stupid and ridiculous that you find yourself laughing out loud.

Musicals – Musically minded characters are one of my favourite. Whenever there’s a reference to a song I know or musical I get a little buzz.

Poetry – I don’t read a lot of poetry, however, I have read a few books where poetry has been integrated into the story. A good example of this is The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss. I’ve found reading poetry within a novel a great way to open myself up to the literary form that I’m most unfamiliar with.

Famous Characters – From a young age I have always found wonder and fascination in seeing through the eyes of a character who is famous or suddenly comes into fame. Whether that be as a princess, model, actress or singer. Meg Cabot is great for this! I also love reading about a normal character befriending a famous one.

Self-Fulfilment – Characters that are open about their struggles and insecurities are the most relatable. Although tragic storylines are important, I sometimes prefer seeing a character struggle when a tragedy hasn’t happened, or when it’s something small. Even when life is going okay, we should still be striving to improve ourselves every day.
