Top Ten Future Mothers

5/16/2017

Although Mother’s Day has already passed in the UK, over in America it is Mother’s Day this weekend, so that is the theme for this week’s Top Ten Tuesday. Like a fortnight ago, The Broke and Bookish has given everyone free reign to choose what they like under that topic. And I’ve chosen characters who would be good mums! Sometimes an epilogue shows a main character looking after their children when it really doesn’t fit with the character. At other times, it really really does! Don’t you just wonder sometimes what they’d be like when they grew up?

Here are my top ten future mums in literature!

  • Wendy Darling from Peter Pan by J.M. Barrie – It would be impossible to do this topic without including Wendy! All the characters treat her like a mum, she’s even one at the end of the novel when she’s all grown up. I know, it breaks my heart too. I love Peter and Wendy together, but I could just imagine her telling all those wonderful stories to her children.

  • Violet Baudelaire from A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket – Throughout the books, Violet is constantly looking after her siblings. She takes great care for them, and loves them so much. Plus, imagine the amazing inventions she could make, she could create toys or machines that would help them in their day to day lives.

  • Louisa from Me Before You by Jojo Moyes – Like the previous two, Louisa is on this list because she is very caring. She makes it her mission to look after Will, becoming really organised and committed. But even before then she’s been looking after her family, including her nephew. I’d love to see what goofy outfits she’d dress her children in too!

  • Jane Eyre from Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bronte –Jane Eyre is very head-strong, standing up for what is morally right. Perhaps she would be a character that would make the choice not to have a child, but if she did she would really teach them how to be good and real.

  • Allyson from Just One Day by Gayle Forman – Allyson is constantly growing as a person throughout Gayle Forman’s novel. It ends at just the beginning, even after we finish hearing about her journey, there is still a lot for her to grow. I definitely think that this would be something she’d teach her children if she had any. To step outside of your comfort zone, and work on yourself.

  • Sarah from 50 Ways to Find a Lover by Lucy-Anne Holmes – I would love nothing more than to read another hilarious blogpost from Sarah about parenting a child. There’d probably be a page where she fabricates her childbirth and then gets into trouble for it. Hilarity would insue!

  • Luna Lovegood from Harry Potter by J.K Rowling – Even as a teenager it is evident that Luna is wise beyond her years. She is odd, quirky and very accepting of herself. Who wouldn’t want a mother like that? Plus she’d give wonderfully weird advice!

  • Cinder from The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer – Having been through a troubled childhood, Cinder would definitely have the experience to make sure that her children are adored and loved. Of course there’s also a lot of other things that would affect it.. I’m curious; would being a cyborg make it any different? For one thing, she’s a good leader, so I’m sure she’d be great at looking after her family.

  • Georgia Nicholson from Angus, Thongs and Full Frontal Snogging by Louise Rennison – Do I think Georgia would be a good mum? I’m not actually sure. What I do know is that I’d love to find out whether she becomes an embarrassing parent like she claims her mum is. Perhaps she’d create her own little mumsy vocabulary!

So that’s my top ten for this week! Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

My Questions To You:

  4. Ooh I like this topic! Wendy Darling seems like a great choice, and Luna- even though I've only read the first book so I don't really know her character- but from what I've heard she's pretty awesome. :)

    1. I felt like I'd be betraying everyone if I didn't include Wendy! Peter Pan and the Lost Boys call her mother in the book and films, how could I not? :)

  5. This is SUCH a fantastic twist on the prompt!! I LOVE IT SO MUCH. And I 500% would want Luna Lovegood as a mother. <3 She's so so precious and I think her kids would grow up so loved and also so peculiar and special. :D And I think Scarlet from The Lunar Chronicles would make a fantastic mum...and Wolf would make such a good dad too. :D

    1. Thank you!! Luna Lovegood would be the kind of mother that gives you really weird advice, but then after a good thinking session you'd see how it all makes sense. ^.^ OOOOH! Yes! Scarlet and Wolf would be such good parents! I could imagine them travelling everywhere and teaching them how to protect themselves. Meanwhile giving them the love that Scarlet received from her grandmother. :)

  6. I love that your list includes motherly figures instead of just mothers. Violet Baudelaire is definitely my favourite character out of this list!

    1. Thank you! She's one of my favourites on the list too. After her parents die, she often takes on her mother's role to look after Klaus and Sunny, it's lovely to read. Even though it is of course very frustrating at times. :D
