Top Ten Future Fathers
6/13/2017
Father's Day has managed to fall on the same day for people in the UK and USA, June 18th! It would only be fitting for The Broke and the Bookish to create a post celebrating dads in literature. A few Top Ten Tuesdays ago, we celebrated Mothers Day with a freebie post. This week is the same, therefore I'm sticking with the theme I went with of characters who have the potential to be great parents! Here goes:
Gabriel Oak - Far From the Madding Crowd by Thomas Hardy
Gabriel Oak was one of my favourite characters from Far From the Madding Crowd. He stuck by Bathsheba throughout the novel and had so much commitment to her and his farming. I'm sure he'd commit just as much to his children too!
Neville Longbottom - Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone by J.K. Rowling
I could list many great dads from the Harry Potter series. However I fear that might be cheating, just a little! Neville is such a darling, and he sticks with whats right, even if that means going against his friends. Neville's children would grow up to be noble and brave!
Lincoln - Attachments by Rainbow Rowell
Okay, reading other people's emails without permission is creepy, but he really improves as a person throughout the novel. Lincoln becomes independent and confident in himself. I'm sure he'd make lots of mistakes while raising children, like anyone, but there's lots he could teach them about love and becoming happy with yourself.
Kvothe - The Name of the Wind by Patrick Rothfuss
I'll admit I'm not too sure on this one. Kvothe has gone through a lot and he's become very independent, curiosity gets the better of me though. He's so caring of Auni, I could imagine him singing his children to sleep. He'd definitely be protective! You never know, Rothfuss might write something in at the end.
Westley - The Princess Bride by William Goldman
What makes Westley an amazing potential father? Well, for starters he's valiant, faithful to the people he loves, and has many adventures to tell. Ooh! Here's a wild theory! What if the story is somehow true, and the grandad in the film is actually Westley himself? From another dimension or something? Okay, maybe that's a wild stretch, but it's interesting!
Park - Eleanor & Park by Rainbow Rowell
It's official. Rainbow Rowell is on this list twice! Park's just so caring of Eleanor, his parents brought him up really well too. He'd have a lot to pass on.
Klaus - A Series of Unfortunate Events by Lemony Snicket (Daniel Handler)
All of the Baudelaire children are inquisitive and supportive of each other. It's no surprise that I'd include Klaus as a future father after including Violet in the future mother's list!
Mark - The Martian by Andy Weir
Mark would be one of those embarrassing dads. I mean, he's hilarious! So many jokes, his kids would be forever laughing.
Aspen or Prince Maxon - The Selection by Kiera Cass
I wouldn't be able to decide between these two characters. They're both amazing in their own ways. Aspen is strong and protective, whereas Prince Maxon is clever and gentle. I'd love to see what they were like. I know Prince Maxon has children later in the series, I wonder if Aspen has any too?
Michael - The Princess Diaries by Meg Cabot
Honestly, part of me doesn't even know why Michael is on this list. I just love him so much! He's down to earth, loving and pretty smart too! I'd love to see how he fairs as a father.
That was surprisingly difficult! Perhaps I'm a bit biased, most of the books I read have females as the main character, those are the ones I remember the most. I really need to read up and find some more fantastic dads! Do you have any favourites? If you participated in Top Ten Tuesday too then leave a link in my comments section. I'd love to check it out!

What a fun list! I completely agree that Klaus would make an amazing future father! :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! All the Baudelaire siblings are fantastic. They're still so humble after all they've gone through! 😊
DeleteI like your Princess Bride theory! I can go with that. And Lincoln/ Park- I need to read more Rainbow Rowell. I've only read Fangirl. Speaking of, maybe Levi... ? He'd be a good dad I would think.
ReplyDeleteMark from The Martian too. I've only seen the movie, but yeah...
Great list. :)
It's a bit vague but it could work couldn't it! I think his dad reads him the story in the book.. Fangirl was my first Rainbow Rowell. I would've put Levi on the list but it's been too long since I read it! I can't remember what he was like, even though he was lovely! >.<
DeleteI read The Martian last year. It's good! Better than the movie 😜
Thank you! 😊
Love the spin on this topic!! Neville and Michael would TOTALLY make awesome dads. I also think Sirius would've been a good dad since he was such a great godfather to Harry :(
ReplyDeleteWhen Sirius talks about Harry living with him. :(
DeleteGreat spin on the topic! Neville Longbottom would be SUCH a good father.
ReplyDeleteThank you! He so would wouldn't he?! XD
DeleteI love your take on the topic so much! Neville would be an amazing dad! And OMG, Mark would indeed be so hilarious as a dad :)
ReplyDeleteThank you! :D I could imagine Mark being one of those dads that teaches their kids funny little tricks. He'd be the kind of person to film things like the batdad videos! ^.^
DeleteWhat an interesting take on this week's prompt! I often think about what will happen in characters lives after the book is over, too!
ReplyDeleteIt's a great thing to wonder isn't it! I sometimes wonder about the parents too, how they met and fell in love, things like that. :)
DeleteI like your take on the list. Excellent!

DeleteI love your take on this one, and yes totally agree with all the ones I am familiar with especially Gabriel Oak, he is such a solid unassuming fellow and would make a wonderful dad.
ReplyDeleteMy Top Ten Tuesday @ Engrossed in a good book
Gabriel Oak really is a wonderful man isn't he. I supported him through to the end of the novel. :)
DeleteAw, Neville is a great choice! Great list. :-)
ReplyDeleteI agree that Gabriel Oak would make a great day :-)
ReplyDeleteNeville Longbottom would make such a great father, despite the fact I've still not read the books, but I definitely get a fatherly vibe from him.
